Workers with Disabilities

Minimize

For many people with disabilities, a good planning process includes real opportunities for exploring the world of work and developing preferences and interests. Good career exploration gathers information, not only on specific interests and skills, but also on the personal characteristics and other attributes that the job seeker has to offer.

Workforce Alliance provides specialized equipment in its career centers that will help people with disabilities to research and apply for jobs, including:

  • JAWS (Job Access with Speech): A software program that makes personal computers using Microsoft Windows accessible to blind and visually impaired users
  • MAGic: A screen magnification program that enlarges words or images on a computer screen
  • ONYX: A computer screen and document magnifier
  • Open Book: A powerful scanning tool that helps seeing impaired individuals read, edit and manage printed and graphic-embedded text
  • Sorenson Video Relay: Empowers the deaf and hard-of-hearing community to communicate with both deaf and hearing business contacts using video relay service

Workforce Alliance also can arrange for a sign-language interpreter for in-house interviews, or for help with job search paperwork.
