General Incentives

WELFARE TO WORK TAX CREDIT

The Welfare-to-Work Tax Credit is a federal income tax credit that encourages employers to hire long-term welfare recipients. This tax credit can reduce your federal tax liability by as much as $8,500 per new hire!

WORK OPPORTUNITY TAX CREDIT

The WOTC is a federal tax credit that encourages employers to hire eight targeted groups of job seekers by reducing employers’ federal income tax liability.

The new hire must belong to one of eight WOTC target groups:

  • Welfare recipients
  • 18-year-old to 24-year-old food stamp recipients
  • Veterans
  • Vocational rehabilitation referrals
  • 16-year-old to 17-year-old residents of Empowerment Zones or Enterprise Communities hired as "Summer Youth Employees"
  • 18-year-old to 24-year-old residents of Empowerment Zones or Enterprise Communities
  • Ex-felons or work-release inmates from low-income families
  • Recipients of Supplemental Security Income benefits

TAX CREDIT FOR PURCHASE OF MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT

New and expanding businesses that manufacture, process, compound, or produce goods for sale are eligible for this exemption. No web site is available on this particular tax credit, but the form used for this credit is the DR-1214, whether seeking a) to make purchases of machinery and equipment tax-exempt, or b) a refund of previously paid taxes. Urban Jobs Tax Credit

This tax credit encourages both the creation of job opportunities in qualified high-crime areas and the economic expansion of new and existing businesses in those areas.

Businesses must be located within urban areas designated by the Office of Trade, Tourism and Economic Development (OTTED), and they must have hired a specific number of employees and from specific industries.
