   May 2008 Declared “Workforce Development Professionals Month”

West Palm Beach, FL, May 19, 2008 -- The Palm Beach Board of County Commissioners proclaimed the month of May 2008 to be “Workforce Development Professionals Month” in Palm Beach County. County Commissioner Jess Santamaria presented the official proclamation to Workforce Alliance President and Chief Executive Officer, Kathryn Schmidt.

After receiving the proclamation, Ms. Schmidt sent a message to all 140 employees of Workforce Alliance stating: “I would like to congratulate all Workforce Alliance staff members upon receiving this recognition since it stands as a public expression of gratitude from the leadership of Palm Beach County for the dedicated services of all workforce development professionals here in Region 21 of the State of Florida. details...
   Workforce Alliance holds online Virtual Job Fair

West Palm Beach, Florida – (February 12, 2008) – A Virtual Job Fair for Palm Beach County businesses to recruit new employees is being held by Workforce Alliance from February 16th through February 29th and running day and night at the specially created website, www.alliancevirtualjobfair.com


Kathryn Schmidt, President and Chief Executive Officer of Workforce Alliance, said, “This is a new concept, and the 24-hour access makes it much easier for those job seekers who have classes or daytime jobs to attend. Workforce Alliance Concludes Three-Year Biotech Training Program

West Palm Beach, Florida (January 9, 2008) -- Workforce Alliance, the non-profit organization that manages job training programs in Palm Beach County, is closing a grant program that enabled over ninety professionals to upgrade their skills and prepare for employment in the life sciences and biotechnology-related industries over the past three years.

The Workforce Alliance’s expiring Biotechnology Training Grant was funded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s High Growth Job Training Initiative in 2004 for a three-year period that expired at the end of 2007. The program targeted professionals holding a BS degree in math or science who wished to earn certification in biotechnology and make a career move into the expanding job opportunities in Palm Beach County’s biotechnology industry. details...

   Palm Beach County firms receive over $346,000 in training funds from Workforce Alliance

West Palm Beach, Florida (November 30, 2007) -- Workforce Alliance awarded $346,480 in federally-funded training grants to ten Palm Beach County employers during the past quarter (August – October, 2007), funding job-related training for over 220 employees.

The program, entitled “Employed Worker Training,” is intended to help Palm Beach County businesses remain prosperous and competitive by providing funds to give their employees additional skills or a certification, advance their wages and help provide a path to personal advancement.

Kathryn Schmidt, President and Chief Executive Officer of Workforce Alliance, pointed out, “The total impact of the grants was over $900,000 since the ten businesses that received the awards added a total of over $556,000 of their own funds to conduct the training. Florida's minimum wage will increase from $6.67 to $6.79 per hour, or 12 cents effective January 1, 2008. Minimum wage applies to all employees in the state who are covered by the federal minimum wage. Additionally, the wage for "tipped employees" will be incresaed to $3.77 per hour. details...
